Zinc is a type of mineral (trace element) that our body only needs in very small quantities, but it is very important for many processes in our body. Zinc contributes to normal hormone levels and is good for eyesight.

Zinc supports the body's immune system, which contributes to a good resistance. In addition, zinc plays a role in the construction and breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and nucleic acids. Finally, zinc helps with mental pressure and exertion.

In the Netherlands, a shortage rarely, if ever, occurs because we ingest zinc through meat, cheese, grain products, nuts and crustaceans and shellfish. Supplementation to support daily health is therefore unnecessary.

However, various studies show that increased zinc intake through supplements can shorten the duration of mild upper respiratory tract infections (e.g. a cold). It is important to achieve a high daily dosage, preferably >75mg per day. This means that at least 5 tablets must be taken per day (1 every 2-3 hours).

For many athletes, this is a standard routine of their infection prevention protocol in the run-up to and during the most important events of a season. Especially when they have to travel a lot or eat in unfamiliar places (which results in an increased risk of infection).
